Offset, Crane or Straight: Choosing a Handle

The handle decides how your hand and wrist feel at five o'clock.

Steel gets all the attention, but the handle is what your hand lives with all day. Three shapes cover almost everything.

Straight (classic)

Both shanks are symmetrical. It gives a direct, traditional feel and is simple and precise — but it forces the thumb up and the wrist into a more bent position, which can tire the hand over a long day. Good for shorter sessions and stylists who like a classic grip.

Offset

The thumb ring is set further forward, so your thumb sits in a more natural, relaxed position and your hand opens less. It’s the most popular modern handle for a reason: noticeably kinder on the wrist with no loss of control. Most of our cutting scissors are offset.

Crane

Takes the offset idea further — the lower shank angles down and away, letting your elbow drop and your wrist sit flatter still. It’s the ergonomics champion, especially for cutting with your elbow lifted. If your wrist or shoulder niggles by the afternoon, a crane is worth trying.

The quick answer

For all-day comfort, offset is the safe default and crane is the upgrade for anyone who feels it in the wrist or elbow. A straight handle suits precise, shorter work and classic preferences. The finish doesn’t change the ergonomics — pick the handle first, then the colour.
